player info available at tables

You can view a few player statistics while you are at a table, after this morning's update. Just click any player's avatar, and a "mini stats panel" will pop up for each player [Edit July 24 2016 - click your name to get the stats panel to appear; click any other player's avatar for the same effect]:
mini stats panel
The first number is their Elo rating. This only appears in games that have rankings (currently Hearts and Spades). If all that you see is a dash, then the player is not yet ranked.

The 2nd number is how many games the player has "completed". This is the same as the number shown as "Finished" in your own stats panel.

The 3rd number tells you how much the person tends to quit games. You should not expect this to be a perfect 0%, since people sometimes get kicked from games accidentally, or have to leave due to unforeseen circumstances. Only the last 16 games are tracked, so it's pretty easy to improve this score with just a few games. Note: it is not counted as quitting if
  • you leave a table that has not yet started
  • you leave a bots-only table before the game finishes
  • you leave a private table before the game finishes
This score is supplied to give you an idea about how reliable the player is. The higher the percent, the more likely it is that the person might skip out on your game.

The update this morning also fixed a long-standing issue that players were able to sign in from a table. It's convenient to be able to do this if you forget to log in from the home page, but some people were using it to manipulate their stats by logging in just before a win at a table. It's no longer allowed, and there's an obvious reminder at the top of the home page letting you know when you're not logged in.
sign in from the home page only!
Other changes: The cards are now fanned wider by default in the Twenty-Nine game, and chat lobbies now hang around for 24 hours at least. Also, bot strategies have been slightly improved in Spades and Double Deck Pinochle.

lol.. re loggin on in the middle of a game, just for the record, th bazillion or so times that I did so was never to improve my stats (which Ive only looked at maybe twice). I did so to satisfy my child like (ish) sense of humor shocking those who would judge a book by its cover (you know who you are)

The "games quit" stats... Now thats what I care about.. I dont care how bad a person might play I care wether there gonna finnish what they started....
Haveing said that the "games quit" stats needs a little tweeking because at one point it correctly identified me as haveing 0% chance of bailing on a game then after playing 2-3 more games that same evening it changed to 13% chance ??? with no intervening act.. just saying

Very happy to see Elo and stats at the table, Marya. I would, however, like them to be reflective of rated games only. And instead of having abandoned game stats for 16 games, why not have them for a specified period of time - 30 days maybe? Are you considering having a start button or a delay for 30 seconds or so - it would give players a chance to opt out of playing at that table and not be penalized for an abandoned game.

Very happy to see ELO and stats available at the tables Marya. However, I would like them to reflect stats only for rated games and not all games and the abandoned game percentage be for a specified period of time (perhaps a month), rather than for 16 games. Are you considering a start button or a start delay - it would give players a chance to opt out of playing at that table without incurring an abandoned game?

I understand a number of people were using this feature just for fun, no worries.

You were playing Spades? Currently I see you with 0% Spades quits, and I only see you playing 1 game since this update was applied.

If you will write to me to give me more detail about what you saw, I will investigate this further. marya@worldofcardgames.com

I don't know about the start button. I haven't ruled it out.

Not having a start button makes displaying the stats of the 4th player to join fairly useless... this is especially unfortunate in Spades for the person who will be partnered with them ('partner roulette').

I've always liked Bagwhore and I appreciate his sense of humor.

There was a player at Yahoo, BarryTheLawyer, who openly admitted using multiple connections and id's in order to break the record for consecutive Hearts wins. Some people thought this was terrible but just as many, myself among them, thought it was hysterical: we regularly encouraged him (in the lobby). At one point, he started complaining about how boring it was but we cheered him on... he stopped, by the way, and changed his ID, when he hit 100 straight wins .

Cheating was never much of an issue at Yahoo, by the way, because they did not not keep a leader board, as you do, incentivizing cheating, in my opinion, for those so inclined (though I doubt there are many cheaters here) and also because it was fairly easy to find them out since anyone could see not only basic stats for a player but also information about every game they had ever played, including player id's and final scoresl: for example, a long winning streak in Hearts with a different id being always present and losing, was a dead give away. Spades is more problematic since, of course, if you are inclined to cheat, all you need is a phone connection with your partner.

Most people are above such shameful behavior, fortunately, but the more you reward high ratings (handing out prizes would do it) the more likely it is to happen. At Yahoo, the only time you saw someone's ratings was during a game: this was enough to make rated games more interesting than unrated games, but not enough to encourage cheating; and you never saw the ratings of players you had disliked or did not play... management did not have to punish cheaters: other players did that, either by exposing them in the lobby or simply disliking them.

This solution for cheating is exactly like your solution for quitting (Spades games anyway) now, very simple, very effective, and no heavy-handed intervention by management required.

note: I'm still regularly losing a lot of points because of internet problems, by the way, playing Hearts... since you give 'quitters' there the equivalent of 3 times a normal loss, instead of just a normal loss as you do in Spades. Yahoo gave quitters a ratings loss only if their POSITION went on to lose (their punishment, and the question of whether or not they DESERVED any, being left to other players). I don't expect you will do that, but I do hope you will soon stop the (excessively punitive, imo) loss X 3 you're giving to people who abandon Hearts games (if only to spare those who either have connection problems or have to leave a table for personal reasons, unexpected guests for example).

Bagwhore, I checked the other username that you mentioned, and I did find a quit associated with that user in the logs. It occurred April 30 - you quit the game about 3 seconds before it ended, a bot was called in to replace you, and then you came back to the table. It looks to me like it was accidental, but there's no grace period for returning. Given this quit appearing in the logs, I don't know how you would have started with a 0% quit ratio for that user.

Just so it's clear, the quit ratio has been recorded for over a year. It just hasn't been exposed till now. So if you had quit a game before the update was applied, it would show up in your stats info after the update. Again, only the last 16 games matter. And a small quit ratio is still very acceptable. It's understandable that people may quit accidentally.

Thanks Marya I didnt expect such a thorough investigation and analysis.. lol Now that you mention it I remember now that i had accidently close at the end then immediatly jumped back on when i realized... (i would not be the first male to have a "premature" responce when excited lol).

So yeah when i started that evening it was zero and it makes sence that it changed later due to the event i had forgotten about.. Thanks again for being such a wonderful host, me casa su casa.

Hi Marya,

it is really of so little importance, but could I suggest to limit the click area to show the player infos to the bottom panel (where are the name and points)? Sometimes I click in the avatar while wanting to click a card. But I repeat: it is not important, and may be I am missing something.

Just a few players have reported that this happens for them... Actually I was thinking of just removing it from your own avatar, and leaving it as-is for others. I will take a look into it.
